Why Start?
I get this question a lot from moms who are on the edge of trying to start a business. They are toying with the idea of maybe diving in but they are terrified to start and they really just don’t know what to do. So when they decided that they are ready to reach out to me they ask “Why did you start?”. I usually respond with “Why Not?” haha. But in all seriousness, why did I start AtHomeEntrepreneur.com?
Well I have been an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember. The minute I learned how to make those threaded friendship bracelets, if you grew up in the 90’s you know what im talking about, I made and sold them. I sold those beaded keychain lizards, again it was a 90’s thing. I sold items I no longer used. I taught others how to make the bracelets and the lizards and they’d pay me to teach them. I was all about an income where I could make it on my own time. I was in school and back then I was obsessed with school. I was the model student who never missed a day, was sad when I didn’t get an A+ on something, always wanted homework… yea I know I know… weirdo. But I didn’t want a “job” because I didn’t want anything interfering in my school work or after school activities. However, I still wanted money to be able to go and do things with. I don’t know that I knew what the word “entrepreneur” was at that time, but I undoubtedly have been one for many many years.
Sure, I held the “regular job” through college, after college, got the fancy government job with the big paycheck because that’s just what you did. Go to school, graduate, get the big paycheck job. The thing was I HATED everything about it. Sure the paycheck was nice, but the commute was 2 hours each way, I hated my coworkers, the job was boring, and to me the big paycheck just wasn’t worth the misery. So I QUIT!
I was working on the weekends as a personal trainer, i’ve held a pt certification since my first year of college, and I had some of the BEST clients ever. I came home from my big girl job one day and told my then husband that I wanted to quit my job and be a health coach. That’s exactly what I did! We packed up our lives, we moved to California, I ran my health and fitness business, attended a TON of AWESOME seminars, made really good money, and was living the dream. But the thing is dreams change, the marriage wasn’t good, we hated California, so we packed up and moved to Florida. My business wasn’t as fun as it had been, my marriage fell apart, I found myself not wanting to train people like I had dreamed just a short year before that.
After the mess I took a part time job, got a divorce, and really just didn’t know what I was going to do. I knew I needed a new dream but had no idea what it would be. It wasn’t until I met my wonderful and amazing husband, we found out that we were pregnant, and moved to an entirely new city that I realized what I REALLY loved doing. I have ALWAYS loved teaching people, I have alway loved watching other succeed, I enjoy helping others find the joy and dreams in their lives. I KNEW how to start successful business, I knew what it took to “get out there” and be seen, I knew the steps to getting clients to say yes, I knew how to set up websites, send emails, follow through, and make a business successful and I LOVED sharing those tips with others.
Becoming a mom made it even more important to me. I KNEW what it was like to be a stay at home mom with a passion. I LOVE my kid more than words will ever describe but I knew I wanted to do, help, and grow. I also wanted to be able to pick up and go and do whenever I wanted without having to ask for “time off”… im a beach aholic. I wanted to work with other moms who KNEW they too were meant for something BIG! Those moms who were on the side of scared but really wanted to start and create and needed the bit of hand holding and confidence boosting. So many moms think that if you start a business you’ll go bankrupt, you’ll never see your kids, you’ll be taking away time from this or that, they’ll fail, the list goes on. But the truth is, starting a business is SUPER simple these days. Selling what you know online is simple these days. People DO want to buy what you have because there is a need for it.
That’s why I do what I do. I teach moms how to start, run, and grow and online business selling what they know. I teach them how they can balance the mompreneur life and the mom life. I teach them how to be present in their kiddos lives and share their passion with others. I found my ultimate dream after a lot of soul searching and mentorship from a coach or two down the line and I am ready to help others who were in my position.
Life isn’t meant to be miserable, life is meant to be enjoyed and explored. It’s time to put down the excuses and pick up the I CAN SUCCEED attitude!
Why did I start? I wanted to be able to stay home with my kiddo, earn a fantastic income, and chase my passion!
